Is the stone not just a random rock

Site drawing from visual survey

carried out by Daniel. Click on the image to see a photographic comparison.

Site drawing from visual survey correctly orientated and cleaned. This is the one Isaac will be using for his work.

Ground level measured by Ashleigh is included in site drawing. Follow the link to see how this was done.

Daniel's initial impressions:

"I think that the standing stone was put there deliberately by humans because not only is it an ideal shape but it is definitely directed in a northern position. There is also evidence such as burial mounds and mounds of stones nearby which suggest this area was used frequently, especially for farming and if so they would have moved a stone like this unless they were using it for something."

If the stone was erected on site some of the stones charted by Daniel could be packing stones and possibly there could be other remains (maybe metallic/magnetic) under the surface. To get a really good idea of the orientation of Daniel's site drawing and possibly hunt down anything magnetic in the ground Isaac carried out a magnetic survey.

But maybe the stones at the base are just random stones and the standing stone is just a random stone deposited there at the end of the ice age. Then this stone would be a glacial erratic. Could this be true? Check out Ashleigh's and Isaac's grain structure survey.

You can look up and describe what an eratic is. Also have a look how e.g. the stones at stonehenge were secured in the ground.
