Iron Age Camp

My experiences of the camp

When we arrived on the Thursday, we were aware that the camp would have embankments but I did not imagine quite how large they would be. They were set up in a labyrinth system to make sure that invaders were cut down before they got near the entrance. We thought we found what looked to be a fake entrance and 3 layers of banks.

In the image on the left you can see some kind of terracing leading up towards the centre of the camp.

We did, however, get a great panorama form the center of where the fort would have been and managed to convert it into 3D.

In an Iron age camp there are many features to be on the look out for. It is made mainly in a motte and bailey style with one totally elavated area and others that are not so. The whole structure is surounded by hills on one side, which serve as a natural protection, but on the other side allows for a great view of the lanscape so that the inhabitants can see what is coming. The embankments that surround the fort would have been protected through various fences of wood. These have obviously rotted away and have now been replaced with trees.

It is important to realise that the people living within the camp would have been vary aware of the night sky and that it would have been impossible not to have been influenced by it.
